Slime City rises again!

Waaaaaaay back in 2007 I stumbled across Slime Square, a Ghostbusters RP sim. Like so many things on SL it eventually disappeared.

However it now seems that one of the sim's original creators has paired with some new blood and they're creating a new version of Slime Square.

New York Public Library

Shhhhhh!

Oh yes they'll be totally discrete

Ray's Occult Books makes a return
Ghostbusters' HQ

Sculpt Ectomobile. Looks nice.

You KNOW what happens when Dickless shuts off the containment unit

Vigo the Carpathian's portrait is on display

The slime river running under New York

Phillies Cafe from Hopper's famous Nighthawks

Zuuuuuuuuuuul!

Spook Central

The Gatekeeper and the Keymater

The Traveller Has Come!

Gozer the Destructor!

While I don't have time to join in the sim for full time RP it's a great build with lots of things to find while you explore. And, as a nice change, you don't get bombarded by a million "Thou Shalt Not" pop ups when you enter the sim. If you're a fan of the movies or even if you just appreciate a great build, drop by for a look!

Exploring SF on the grid: Jupiter 2

This post almost borders on advertising more than an exploration but bear with me.

Most people will be familiar with the 60s TV series Lost In Space, which effectively became a space version of the Swiss Family Robinson. Sadly the initial villain of the piece, Dr. Smith, was turned into a parody of itself becoming more camp than a Boyscout Jamboree.

Jupiter 2 landed on the planet Preplanus.

Piloting and Life Support stations

Computers and the elevator to the lower deck

Lower Deck and The Robot.

A cute touch with some vintage reading material (the centre of plagiarism claims over who "created" Lost In Space).

The Jupiter 2 is a lovely build, if a little static. You can buy you own copy of the ship if you want to set up and RP sim as well as copies of the outfits from the series. (Mmmmm velour).

Exploring SF on the grid: Starbase 11

I used to be a big Star Trek fan. I still am in many respects though Deep Space 9 was where I started losing interest. However I'm enough of a fan to recognise the amount of work that has gone into building Starbase 11.

Starbase 11

Starbase 11 from the Original series episode "Court Martial" (retouched from the rerelease DVD collection)

Star Trek has been pretty big on SL. Though sims have come and gone over the years you can always track down a Trek RP sim somewhere.

View from the orbiting shuttle dock.

Transporter room (with the NOMAD probe from the episode "The Changeling")

Living quarters on Starbase 11 are finely detailed

The local flora has been recreated to match.

Screen with an image taken from the Star Fleet Medical Reference Manual a fan publication from the 80s.

Even down to getting the food from the original series correct.

There's even a Starship Enterprise for you to explore.

The famous bridge of the starship

Scotty would be proud.

It's an impressive build and certainly helps for setting the scene for any Trek based role-playing. Even if you're not a hard core Trek fan the sim is worth exploring. The build is top notch. Kudos to all the people who have helped to put it together.

Hill Valley 2015

Back in 2008 someone made an excellent go of recreating Back to the Future's Hill Valley from 1955.

This time round Latok Neumann has recreated Hill Valley in its 2015 incarnation.

Cafe 80s. I assume the Donkey Kong will eventually become the Wild Gunman arcade game.

Thankfully the Jaws franchise stopped after the fourth movie

Possibly this little gem was found via behind the scenes photos, but I love the name.

It's still being built but the brief chat I had with Miss Neumann said it was just taking forever so she opened it now. Drop by for a look. It's an amazing build.

SLRFL comes to a close

After many months of stress, angst, fun, primadonnas, sillyness, hurt feelings, new friendships, creativity and most importantly fund raising, the Second Life Relay For Life has finally come to a close. While I'm very much aware of how bad cancer is, having lost friends to it myself, I think that half a year for a fundraiser has pushed the bounds of patience and tolerance of many people. I also know I'm not the only one who was disappointed that the RFL was only being donated to the American Cancer Society, with no mention of the international groups also part of RFL.

That said, the sims put together for the actual Relay itself showed some impressive builds and imagination:

Part of the Journey to the Centre of the Earth build. Also dubbed "crash mountain" because of the absolutely atrocious lag there.

Breaking through

The fall of the remnants of Atlantis

Stalag Luft III from the movie The Great Escape. An interesting choice for a theme I thought.

The underground tunnels

Gojira (or Godzilla if you prefer) battling Gigan and Mothra.

Interior of the 20,000 Leagues Beneath the Sea sim. All of this was built by one person I'm told.

Exterior, complete with mermaid.

The towers of New Babbage

The Munchkin Village of Oz (You can just see the feet of the Witch of the East sticking out from under the house to the left)

The witch and one of her flying monkeys.

The Argonath

Minas Tirith

Caledon itself contributed some L$1,297,328 to the fundraising, which equates to almost $5,000 USD. A big congratulations to all who helped out whether through funds, time, the soothing of ruffled feathers or the support of those organising things.

Huzzah!
