Caledon Brigadoon appears

I missed an earlier appearance of the village of Brigadoon. But it was out last night and I managed to snap a picture of it in situ.

Anniversary Party

RL got in the way of our official first anniversary, so this will officially be one year and one month.

So in celebration of the Inauguration of the Duchy of Argylle and the Duke and Duchess of Argylle's first anniversary, you are invited to attend a reception at Primbroke Manor, Caledon Argylle, Tuesday, 15th July at 7 pm SLT.

Dress in your finest for an evening of dance and merriment.

Under the sea...

The undersea section of Argylle is finished for the most part. There's some things that need tweeking, like the airlock, but it's presentable for the moment. I wanted to make sure there were no plywood blocks sitting around before Tuesday night.

Whine & Cheez night

Come down to the Conservatory on Thursday evening for a taste of music you've probabbly forgotten (or may have even been too young to hear the first time). Music that is rarely played, often with good reason. Join Edward Pearse for an evening of fun and merriment.

Having been tagged by both Otenth and Dia I suppose I should put in something.

1. write the title to your own memoir using six words.
2. post it on your blog.
3. link to the person that tagged you.
4. tag five more blogs.

My title: (borrowing from John Le Carré) A Tinker, Tailor, Soldier and Spy

Caledon Southend

Most recent arrival of the Caledon sims, Caledon Southend, looks to be something of a beach resort type town. LittleBlackDuck Lindsay's buildings are wonderfully rendered as always but the in-progress construction of the Ferris Wheel is intriguing.

The "Caledon Eye" I wonder?

Time to update the map again...

Anniversary milestone

This Sunday will mark the 1st Anniversary of my betrothal to the most wonderful woman I know, Christine McAllister.

From curious beginnings to definitive attraction of two like minded people to marriage with love and true friendship, it's hard to believe only a year has passed. I consider myself honoured to have been blessed with such a wonderful friend and partner.

RL has conspired to postpone our anniversary celebrations but we should be organising something within the next week or two. Most probably venue will be Caledon Argylle. Do feel free to drop by. Things are still being shifted and tweaked as we settle in to the new place but you're more than welcome to drop by for a visit. Enjoy the picnic on the shore.

Say hello to Percy and Laudanum (I'm still impressed by how well peacocks and cats seem be able to get along) while you're there :-)

The Great Race

In 1908 an automobile race was run from New York to Paris. A centenary anniversary was due to be held at the end of this month until China revoked the travel permits due to the Tibet demonstrations.

However what I'm going to discuss here is the kinoscope that was loosely inspired by the original race: Blake Edward's The Great Race.

Now, it's cheesy as hell and it's characters are about a stereotypical as they come.

The hero in white

The moustachioed villain in black

The plucky heroine and suffragette

Is it steampunk? Well not as such. Certainly the concept of steampunk didn't exist in 1965 when it was made. But Professor Fate fits the mad scientist role to a T. His inventions include:

Submarines

Bicycle Blimps

Rocket cars

Sonic Torpedos

And of course the Hannibal 8

The movie not only plays the foils of hero versus villain, but there's some lovely set pieces in here as well. The drivers travel through the town of Boracho (which is Spanish for "drunk") and have the classic bar room brawl. My favourite though it the lovely "homage" to Anthony Hope's The Prisoner of Zenda.

This time the country is called Carpania, where the Crown Prince Hapnik is the spitting image of Professor Fate.

There is of course a local villain, complete with goatee, who is after the throne

Whom our hero must duel.

There's a little something for everyone in film: comedy, music, dancing, fights, car chases, an explosion or two, possibly the largest pie fight ever filmed, faithful assistants, double crosses and some great music from Henry Mancini.

And the best thing of all?

Natalie Wood in her underwear, covered in custard and cream!

It's one of my favourites and one I can enjoy watching again and again.
