Steelhead & Caledon Harvest festival

Starting this week the end result and the hard work of many is the Harvest Festival!



Events are happening across nearly all the Caledon sims and a variety of locations around Steelhead, there are events diverse enough that people should find at least a couple of things to keep them interested.

* Harvest Festival Art Fair - Caledon Tamrannoch, Gallery Tamrannoch – Caledon-on-Sea, Sea Song Gallery

* Steelhead Art Walk: located in Taiyou House

* Pumpkin treasure hunt : Look for pumpkins containing treasures around Steelhead.

* Corn maze: next to the Steelhead Town Hall

* Scarecrow Building Competition, Entries in by Monday and on display throughout the week. Winner to be announced at Friday's dance. See details at the bottom.


* Sunday, September 9 *

* 9:00am – 6:00pm SLT - Tree Felling - Caledon Murdann. Trees (suitable for transplanting) may be felled by buying for L$0. Limit of two trees each, please. The Murdann Thorn tree grows nowhere else.

* 2:00pm SLT – Niko Donburi Concert – SL’s “Weird Al” - Caledon Tamrannoch, Gallery Tamrannoch

* 3:00pm SLT Horse race around Steelhead. Starts at 3 pm SLT, meet at west end of Town Square. Horse and rider combination only.

* 6:00 pm SLT Edward Lowell performs Live Music at Kokopelli Stage: Steelhead

* 7:00pm SLT - Loch Avie Lancers Parade and Review - Caledon. The parade route will wind through several of the Caledon sims, ending on Loch Avie, where the public may mingle with the Lancers and their Patron, Her Grace Eva Bellambi, Duchess Loch Avie upon conclusion of the review.

* Saturday, September 15 *

* 6:00AM – 8:00 AM SLT - Buggy Race - Caledon Murdann. The races will take place on an elevated track. A teleporter to the track will be on the dock. Any model of buggy, carriage, or wagon welcome.


* All Day - Highland Fling - Caledon Loch Avie

* Trebuchets available to fling your friends into the next sim.
* Loch Avie Academy of Arms practice green and free weapons open to all.
* Celtic Music playing all day


* 1:00pm - 2:00pm SLT - Caber Toss Contest. Join Professor Avalanche near the Loch Avie Public House and test your skills with the caber as you drink Uisge Beatha and enjoy the company of your friends.


* 5:00pm - 6:30pm SLT - The Loch Avie Academy of Arms invites you to the first Academy Arms Tournament. Eight contestants will vie for championship of the Harvest Festival Academy Arms Tournament. ALL are welcome to watch the warriors in the sand as the clashing steel of axes and Claymores rings through the air. The event will take place high over the Loch in the new Academy Arena. Sir Telemachus Dean will be referee of the event, and is accepting applications for entry into the contest. Please IM him with your interest. (Should there be more entries than we have time to host during this tournament, we will plan another tournament for the following week to accommodate the numbers.)

* 7:00pm – 10:30pm SLT - Ceilidh - Caledon Loch Avie. The formal ending of the Harvest Festival will be on Loch Avie with Celtic Music of all kinds provided by Lord Primbroke. Come join the musical celebration. Dance. Sing. Enjoy!

4. PG rating for idea

If you'd like to participate, please give a no mod/no copy scarecrow to Christine McAllister by Monday, September 10th. Scarecrows will be displayed in Steelhead and you can vote for your favourite scarecrow! Winner to be announced at the dance on Friday.

Pumpkin hunt:
Look for pumpkins containing treasures around Steelhead, ongoing all week.

Butterfly hunt:
The Loch will be filled with Butterflies by Random Calliope from 7pm SLT until they are all captured.

Friday night in Steelhead was the weekly dance, and the first I had attended in some time owing to outworld commitments.

This weeks theme was "Animals" and there were some interesting interpretations of that theme in attendance.


My dear wife showed her cute and fuzzy side with her adorable little rabbit.


Steelhead's resident DJ and sometime Sheriff (or resident Sheriff and sometime DJ. Possibly a musical Sheriff?) went for his more "natural" approach.


His Grace of Greystoke (the AV Formerly Known As Gnarli) became the butt of assorted Ewe jokes.

Lunar went for a more horsie theme


While Tensai, his partner in crime, took the concept of horse and wings and came up with her own unique variation.


Emilly, our host for the evening took on her bunny aspect, while Fawkes did had a more cunning fox.

Your truly went for a more specific interpretation of "Animal" and engaged in Muppet dancing for the evening.


Earlier in the week Steelhead had unveiled it's new weather system as well. I was impressed with idea and am toying with the idea of something similar for my own plot.

Building revisited

When I started on my first large scale shop as part of the foundation sim of Babbage Square in New Babbage, there wasn't a clear focus of what the theme was going to be other than *Steampunk*.

At the time I was only 2 months in SL and still getting a feel for buildings, textures, and design.



Since then the sim has come to coaless around the grimier inner city side of Steampunk, rather like the SL version of Victorian Manchester.


I recently retextured the outside of it to make it blend into the surrounding area better, but as I did I noticed all the little faults that at the time, I wasn't capable enough to correct.

I've been working on a replacement shop for the Victoria City Emporium. It would seem that the New Babbage one is in need of some work as well.

Wandering Grendel

Many of you may be familiar with the Emporium of Grendel's Children, who make some very impressive, and also very cheap, Avatars. The Emporium itself is based at high altitude but through the (un)fortunate presence of lag the other evening I found myself on the ground. Or at least to start with.




After stumbling through miles of open desert I found an oasis.


Following the stream lead me to a maze of underground caverns


Vast areas, invisible from the surface.


Yet back at the Emporium I realised that as flight is the main means of transportation, it was little wonder I had not discovered the ground before.


I'm not sure how she handles but she looks extremely capable.

Weird Al reprise in pictures

After the success of the "Weird Al" Yankovic themed broadcast on Radio Riel last month a certain Pixie begged for a repeat performance at a UK friendly time. This was organised. I am happy to say that it went down a treat. No only did I not have to worry about missing my alarm and sleeping through the start time, but adding to the Groucho glasses from the original party, Professor Avalanche provided accordions to all those who wished them.

Thankfully this time no one tried to convince me that a song they downloaded from ...er other sources, was a legitimate Weird Al song just because that's what the title said.

I had a great time and it seems it was well received yet again. Comedy radio seems to be well appreciated by Caledonians. I wonder if it's to do with their innate sense of the ridiculous?

More "Weird things in Caledon"

Further to my post last month about things you see but don't really have much of a story to go with, here's a few more things that have caught my eye.


A giant robot wandered through Victoria City one evening. Sadly I was so busy trying to get a photo before it vanished that I forgot to look for a maker's mark.

Caledon expands again!

This week saw the addition of 5 new sims to the Caledon family. Making a total of 24 sims (with yet more on the way!) I don't know where the Guvnah finds the time or the energy.


Caledon Stormhold. Inspired by the novel Stardust by Neil Gaiman, though not based on it. Soon to be home to teaming masses.


Caledon Sound, home to Her Grace Carricre Wind.


Caledon Speirling. Home of the Marquessates of East and West Speirling. For those keeping track of titles we now have Darkling Elytis, The Marchioness of West Speirling, and Kirawill Collingwood, The Marchioness of East Speirling. (Lady Speirling is gentler on the tongue than "Lady East Speirling" I think).

Weird Al reprise

Due to timezone differences there are many European friends who are unable to hear the Radio Riel broadcasts. So after some gentle pleading from a certain pixie I will be organising a reprise broadcast of last Tuesday's Weird Al Special.

Start time is this coming Saturday, 1st of September at 5:00AM to 9:00AM SLT.

Come along down to the Guvnah's Manion in Victoria city and enjoy a tribute to the undisputed king of parody music. The parodies, the original tracks, and the occasional rare "unreleased" track will be featured again. The commentary will be a little different as this is *live* broadcasting!

And if you're one of those Americans who don't go to bed until OMG o'clock in the morning come along and listen to something sure to add some interesting dream imagery for slumber :-)

Happy Rez Day to Christine!

With some Supa Sekret Skilz and a little bit of luck, last night a surprise Rez Day party was organised for my lovely Christine McAllister, Lady Primbroke.

As opposed to last weekend where nearly everything was happening, this Saturday there was only the one and that had finished by 4.

So with some help from Her Grace and Lady Gustafson, people were organised and a little shindig was sprung.

I had fun going through my selection of photos (and the contributions of others), sorting out the ones fit for public consumption, and putting them up for all to see.

And of course once you start playing Doctorin the TARDIS you just KNOW the Daleks will turn up.

All in all a successful night. Christine got a little suspicious by the time it was getting close, because I was busy with making her cake and was being very cagey about it. But her brother knows how to keep her distracted :-)
